The City of Moorabbin Historical Society (CMHS), is a small not for profit organisation of volunteers devoted to preserving the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin 1840-1994. It acts as custodian of Box Cottage Museum opening the cottage for public viewing of an eclectic collection.

City of Moorabbin Historical Society was founded in 1960 by foresighted residents to preserve the history and heritage of the Moorabbin, Highett, Cheltenham, Bentleigh McKinnonn Ormond, Oakleigh South area 1840 -1994.

CMHS is custodian of Box Cottage Museum with an eclectic collection of artefacts from lacework, kitchen equipment, farm machinery and tools, pharmacy, and grocery items.

Volunteers preserve the artefacts, catalogue and photograph items for Museum Australia Victorian Collections, maintain the gardens and make minor repairs. They visit local schools to display some of the items to encourage children to research the local history and open the Box Cottage Museum for  research by students and residents

All volunteers are welcome to join our friendly group.

Opening Hours

Last Sunday of the month 2pm to 4pm February to November except Public holidays.
Open by appointment for visiting groups.
