The WAM programs assist cisgender and transgender women and non-binary people ”, who are identified as at risk or are in the early stages of contact with the criminal justice system.
Women and Mentoring's (WAM) Adult and Young Women's Program assist's cisgender and transgender women and non-binary people, who are identified as at risk or who are in the early stages of contact with the criminal justice system. The program acts as both a preventative and early intervention approach for vulnerable women living in the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Kingston and Casey LGA's. This is achieved through matching our participants with an individual supportive volunteer mentor.
Our purpose is to keep women out of the criminal justice system, reduce the risk of re-offending, build connections and empower women to improve their life outcomes
WAM mentors are good listeners who trust that women are the experts of their own experiences. Mentors believe in a community that is safe and welcoming for all women. WAM mentors are carefully selected, screened, and trained before working in the program. Each mentor is required to participate in regular supervision with program staff and other WAM mentors.
WAM mentors' benefit from receiving ongoing support, supervision and training so they are skilled and prepared for the role and are matched with participants of the program for 12 months or longer.
The WAM values underpin our work: Integrity – Respect – Belonging – Empowerment – Social Justice
