A totally volunteer organisation, CLOC relies on local community support for not only their on stage activities but also for their costume sewing, millinery and set construction teams.Other opportunities exist for show ushering and company administration.
CLOC Musical Theatre was formed in 1964 and has operated in the Kingston Council area for these past 56 years.
Today, CLOC Musical Theatre performs two productions a year (May and October) at The National Theatre, St Kilda. The range of shows produced has covered the entire gamut of music theatre - from traditional operettas to modern works, from singing extravaganzas to dance spectaculars, from classic period pieces to contemporary masterpieces. "Kinky Boots" and "Mamma Mia!" were 2 recent productions.
2008 saw some major developments for CLOC. Firstly, local show business legend, author and commentator John-Michael Howson OAM agreed to become CLOC’s Patron to formalize his long association with and admiration for the company. Secondly, Melbourne’s Kingston Council honored CLOC by naming it as Community Organisation of the Year.
CLOC operates from three permanent facilities, - CLOCworks in Heatherton, a custom-built, very large shed, where CLOC constructs its sets and which allows casts and crews the opportunity of rehearsing on the set prior to moving into the theatre. The Nancy Matthews Costume Centre (NMCC) located next door to CLOCworks, which houses CLOC’s store of 10,000 or so costumes.
At both sites groups of dedicated and skilled volunteers gathers to sew costumes, weld, hammer and nail set constructions and share a wonderfully enjoyable and satisfying time.
The third site is CLOC Central in Moorabbin which is home to the rehearsal and prop sourcing activities required for each production.
CLOC's achievements have been built on sound financial management, bold artistic policies and a strong commitment to consistently provide the highest quality productions at the lowest possible prices - theatre that is entertaining, accessible and memorable. Over five decades of enthusiasm, dedication and sheer hard work by long serving Committee members, casts, productions teams, backstage and technical crews, and a band of loyal, tireless and committed volunteers in all facets of running the company have each contributed to CLOC’s success.
