The Chelsea & Bonbeach Train Station Group was founded on the 29th of September 2008. The group first met in the Chelsea Community Renewal offices to review the results of local community consultation. This committee of volunteers comprised local residents who were passionate about making improvements to both Chelsea and Bonbeach train stations.
Bonbeach Station was of particular concern as it was regularly subjected to vandalism and tagging and had been under maintenance for some time. In the early days, we focused on working bees, we had little money, we had yet to apply for grants and we had a long list of items we wanted to achieve. Initially we had some small successes such as the funding for a water tank at Bonbeach Station, courtesy of Connex (now Metro Trains) and some repairs to seats and installations of extra bins.
Things really took off in December 2009 when the group was awarded a $4800 Federal Volunteers Grant which enabled us to purchase a significant amount of equipment and other assets for use by volunteers at our working bees. This was followed by 3 successful Village Committee Grants for planting programs, a corporate grant from NAB, a donation from Metro Trains, a $3000 Stationeers Grant through KABV, a donation from the Transport Minister- Terry Mulder of $1000 and a Christmas Eve fund raising BBQ at Bunnings Hardware which raised $1500.
From June 2012 onwards we continue to work towards our biggest ever joint planting project to rejuvenate the remainder of the Station St gardens at Chelsea & Bonbeach Stations.
