Lighthouse Foundation’s Bonbeach Community Committee is a crucial network of local people who meet regularly to help ensure young people in the area can heal and thrive.
Lighthouse Foundation provides homes and therapeutic care programs to children and young people impacted by long-term neglect, abuse and homelessness. Our focus is to create caring communities where kids can feel safe, form meaningful relationships and begin to heal from traumatic experiences. For the past 30 years our proven Model of Care has successfully transformed the lives of over 1,000 young people using a range of evidence based strategies. We now educate and support Foster Carers in the same way, so that they too can take care of some of Australia's most vulnerable children. Our Community Committees provide a circle of support for each Lighthouse home. Each committee comprises of local volunteers who meet regularly to fulfill their commitment to ensuring the home remains supported and can continue to meet the basic needs of the young people. The committee are responsible for utilising their own skills, experiences, and networks to ensure the young people within the home can continue their journey into sustainable independent living. Key roles include:
- Cultural - committee members play a crucial role in forming a layer of pseudo uncles & aunties for the young people in the program. Each committee help to ensure that cultural milestones like Birthdays, graduations, and holidays are celebrated. They also play a key role in helping our young people to gain a sense of extended community through role-modelling interactions.
- Fundraising - each committee organises fundraising events throughout the year to go towards the continued services offered in each home.
- Networks & Advocacy - committee members utilise their own local knowledge and access to ensure the home is best supported (for example; organising committee working bees to tidy up the garden, asking local businesses for donations of food/services, sourcing apprenticeships or job opportunities for young people, etc)
Each committee member provides a circle of support for their Lighthouse home, surrounding the young people within it with mentoring, work experience, financial support and other practical help in their journey into sustainable independent living.Lighthouse Foundation’s Community Committees are a crucial part of our specialist Model of Care.
